A wildfire that started as a structure fire in Sunshine Canyon and has grown to almost 20 acres has forced evacuations in the Boulder County foothills.

The Boulder County Sheriff’s Office posted on Twitter at 1:54 p.m. Monday that they were responding to a structure fire in the 2900 block of Sunshine Canyon Drive. But scanner traffic indicated the fire had spread from the home to nearby wildland, and had grown to at least a quarter of an acre and was prompting mandatory evacuations in the area.

By 3:47 p.m., the fire had grown to 18 acres and is being referred to as the Sunshine Wildland Fire, while a separate set of crews are dealing with the original structure fire.

The evacuation area includes Pine Brook Hills and the area west of Foothills Community Park. At this time there is no estimate on how many homes were under the order.
